Briggs, George W.
George Wallace Briggs
GEORGE WALLACE BRIGGS (1875-1959) was born in Nottingham, England and died in Hindhead, Surrey, England. Erik Routley called him the most prolific and successful of the hymnwriters of his generation. Educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge he was a chaplain in the Royal Navy (1902-09). He then served as Vicar of St. Andrew's Norwich and in 1918 became Rector of Loughborough. From 1927-34 he was Canon of Leicester Cathedral, and from 1934 until his retirement in 1956 he served as Canon of Worchester. Briggs was one of the founders of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He wrote many hymns during his lifetime; his most popular hymn, "God Has Spoken by His Prophets," is found as #667 in Hope's newest hymnal WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001). The copyright on this text is the property of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Hope Publishing acts as the agent for the society on all of their copyrights.
