Intersex People

Words By
Daniel Charles Damon
Intersex People – Stephanie Budwey and Marissa Adams helped me write this hymn for a worship service observing Intersex Solidarity Day at The Table in Nashville, TN. Their guidance and encouragement made this text come to life. At least one in one hundred people is intersex. 'People with intersex bodies, like anyone who is seen as different, can face stigma and discrimination in employment, education, and in healthcare settings' (GLAAD Media Reference Guide, 11th ed. www.glaad.org). In my writing I try to give voice to those whose voice has been denied or rejected. In 1986 at the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley, CA, I took some Bible courses from Michael Guinan, OFM. He spoke for three days about Genesis 1, teaching that the rhetorical device 'the heavens and the earth' implies that God also made everything in between. We Celebrate Today with Joy
Words By
Daniel Charles Damon
We Celebrate Today with Joy – In the fall of 2022 Stephanie Budwey asked me to write a hymn using the word transgender. I had written two hymns using the word intersex and so began to think about this new challenge. On March 30, 2023, I read some articles on International Transgender Day of Visibility. Taking notes on these and reading the proc-lamation from President Joe Biden gave me the push I needed to begin to write. Carl Daw gave helpful suggestions on an earlier draft of this text.
