Charles A. Tindley
Stand By Me – Many years ago, I was the pianist for a Camp Farthest Out near Pesca-dero, CA. One of the speakers for the week was Bernie Warfield, an eighty-year-old black Baptist minister who had more charisma in his little finger than I have in my whole body. He asked me one afternoon if I knew “Stand By Me”—not the pop song but the 1906 gospel song by Charles A. Tindley. “I sang it at my father’s funeral,” he said. I didn’t know it, but said, “If you can sing it, I can play it.” He taught it to me, and we did it that night. After singing, “When I’m growing old and feeble,” he interjected, “I ain’t got there yet.” My aunt (who was also at camp) told me after the service, “That song is in the Methodist hymnal.” I’m glad she didn’t tell me sooner, because learning the song by ear gave me a blues version that I have carried with me through life. I recorded it with my band in 2023 on the album Look at the Light. This new arrangement sounds good as printed, and also invites improvisation.
